Forest and Woodlands For more information on the methodologies used in the study, see the ‘Woodfuel Resource in Britain’ final report. Summary available here. Traditional forestry: information on the existing forest resource is based on the sub-compartment database (Forest Enterprise/public forest), and on the National Inventory of Woods and Trees (privately-owned forest). Growth rates for the parts of the stem presently marketed are obtained from the same data sources. Relationships were determined to extrapolate from this portion of the stem to all biomass components (excluding fine roots). These relationships were used in conjunction with existing forecasting models to estimate future growth of all tree components. In the cases of harvesting brash, site and environmental constraints on the proportion of the biological production that could be made available were determined for each Forestry Commission Forest District. These constraints were extrapolated to the private sector using best available information on site differences.
